Small challenge - look here :-)

Hi all, what has started as a 5min "quickie", turned out into major hair pulling exercise.
Enter THE Mighty Allen Key Challenge. Yup, the one with the hex-ball end....

As simple as it sounds, the trouble is, I want this model to be fully parametric, i.e. changing the hex size from say 1/2 to 3/8 would properly regenerate everything, including the f****n ball end.

Any suggestions leading to end my dilemma will be rewarded with cold, frothy beverage (locals only, no shipping, sorry :)

Thanks all,

hey Marker.

make a sweep profile.
make a graph ( which will specify the profile section size)
sweep your profile with evalgraph

could also use trajpar i guess.

best of luck

Here's another approach.

Attached isWF2 part using 2 sketches and a VSS. One sketch controls the OA size and length, the other the hex size.

Sketcher constraints do most of the work. The inside radius at the 'root' of the ball notch is the only thing that isn't parametrically driven from the hex size.

Mine could have been 2 features (not including def. datums & CS)if I had combined the sketches. I thought leaving them separate made them (the sketches)simpler.

And mine has everything tied together as well with no relations in sight (or out of sight, since you can't 'see' them unless you go looking).

I prefer to avoid relations where possible because they are sort of 'hidden' and take some digging to figure out. To each his own.

Thanks for the solutions gentlemen, it's interesting how many ways there is to achieve the same result. ProE will never cease to amaze me; it's a blessing to work with such powerful software... or a curse, depends how you look at it!
Thanks again, have a nice day

id go with a bit of both.
Its a 2 sided coin which you flip every time u model something.
Blessed n Cursed.
