SolidWorks: How to sketch ’Orange Stage’

Hi there.

Some friends and I have gotten ourselves involvedin a range of small engineering projects. We're all engineering students from University of Aalborg, Denmark but in one of the small projects we/I need some advice to get a good start.

Some of you might be familiar with the danish music festival Roskilde Festival (http://www.roskilde-festival.dk). The main-scene at this festival is the so-called Orange Stage (air-photo: http://data.tumblr.com/4214629_500.jpg). What we're I'm interested in sketching this scruture in SolidWorks in order to being able to construct a small-scale model of it. At our study we've worked with SolidWorks for a few years now but primarily for machine design, so this is somewhat different.

We know this is a small 'hack', but our intentions were to design it in SolidWorks using the SheetMetal feature, in order to being able to flatten it so we could get the measurements for the pieces we have to construct to make the complete canop

I had wriiten an answer to you before I opened the picture you had posted so I'm writing a different answer now. Maybe you should break the canopy up into sections which are more managable rather than trying to do it in one piece. Then you could place these together in assembly mode flattened to make the full canopy. I think it will be tricky no matter what way you do it. Good luck.
