I've been looking for ways to do this also. Saving the part out as a shrinkwrap file (file -> save a copy) was suggested to me as a way to do this but it doesn't seem to faithfully follow the contours of a complicated original part. I think it would work quite well for simple parts though.
You can do it with the REX module. There is
an auto surface option that works quite well for some models, particularly
those with organic shapes. If the autosurface option is no satisfactory, you
might need to add surfaces manually to different areas of the stl file.
