Surface merge problem

I'm trying to learn a bit about surfacing. I'm following the tutorial from sharptechdesign (url on bottom of page). I can't seem to merge two styles like they do at the end of the tutorial with the speaker.. I just select the two styles and hit Merge Tool, but they don't merge.. I have no idea what the problem may be.

u have 2 options join and intersect try both, And if still problem persists plz upload the model.
