Tolerances in drawings

I've been *painfully* unsucessful in getting tolernaces to show up in drawings. No matter what I try, the <tolerance mode> selection box in the modify dimension menu stays grayed out. I must be missing something obvious. RunningPro/E2001, date code 2003400 on NT4.0, build 1383, service pack 6.
