i have a youtube video that goes thru one top down technique using a bicycle frame. Search youtube for 'tube frame structure'.basically there are over 7 flavors of top down approaches that range from using curves to drive mechanism to curves and surfaces to delineate parts in an assembly.
i suggest taking at least a 2 day class to learn all about curves - surfaces and top down design then add 10 bucks to your contract rate to pay for it.
