If you do not know how to find out whether you have it....Try this method...

File>new>Layout...

If you can create a layout ....You have Else NO.

So is Advanced Assembly required to do top-down assembly and the use of skeleton models? I never really paid attention before since Advanced Assembly was a module that my company has always had since I was around.

Does anyone know if the trial version or educational versions of WF 3.0 come with Advanced Assembly? I used to use this quite a bit when I was in an engineering role. However, now I'm in IT with the same company and don't really have access to a floating license anymore. I was hoping to stay up-to-speed with PRO/E top-down assembly methodology and thought that I might get an educational of trial version to play with on my home computer for a while.

Thanks,

Eric

Advanced Assemblies lets you do all the powerful features in assemblies like External Copy Geoms and Assembly Interchanges which are useful for replacing a part without a family table instance and not have to do it manually and resolve failures. The last place that I worked could have saved a lot of time if they had the license. Without the License, Skeletons and Interchanges are not allowed

All is not lost however because you can create Assembly Sketches and other features at the top of your tree and put them in a Skeleton Group. You can use these features just like a skeleton model but it's a little more difficult.

Another technique that people use is to create a part with all the geometry that a skeleton model might have to control how other parts are made in the assembly. Put this in the assembly as the first component.

I know PTC has been doing 30 tryouts of WF3 I haven't done that yet because my WF2 student edition works good already but WF3 has added some useful functionality.

All trial editions and student editions come with full functionality however the WF2 student edition has no Model Check functionality but WF3 trial should.

Asho Pulsar,

Top Down design is a methodology and although your regular software does not give you access to certain functions or structure you may still be able to get by.

For a layout, you can assign a sketch part that contains all the data a layout has and define the connections in that way.

If external geometry is not available then you can save dependant copies of each part or feature. That can get a bit messy, but it is a workaround for a lack of functionality.

cheers,

M

asho you should not say this openly. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.............

Friends,

Cheer up...There is no need to worry so much about the lack of AAX. AAX does have a lot of functionalities, but then most have work arounds.

For the top down, you can either create a sketch or a surface and then reference that part. you can also create parameters and relations and drive them down.

It is strange that PTC has not included this in their Foundation Module especially when most have workarounds. Perhaps in WF5 or WF6.... Or when competition catches up.

Getting back on topic...

I have just started a new role and this company does not have AAX. I have introduced the "concept" of skeleton models here without the need of AAX, this is how...

Create the a part in the assembly and name it accordingly and prefix it "SKEL". You now have a method of loading all your assembly datum features, surfaces, etc.in this part and control the assembly as you would with a skeleton part.

Simple! (?)
