top down bottom up

proe_user3000,

"top down" and "bottom up" are terms to describe a method of design. There are many sites with additional information, but the sum of it is (roughly):

top down design: design by using structure or simplified guidelines and assemblies and work your way down to the specific parts

bottom up design: design by building and placing the smallest components in place first and work your way outward until you have the whole assembly.

In reality you will probably use both, and a bit of blending, since each aspect of a design might require different approaches.

It also depends a bit on the number of people that work on a project. If you have a large assembly - like a machine - then if you start with a skeleton (the "top") everyone can start working and "grow" to eachother, while else there has to be some part of the job finished before others can start designing their part. So you'll find more top-down in large projects.

But as said by Magneplanar, most of the jobs are not strictly one or the other but a mix of both.
