Using skeleton models in SW

What is the methodic when using skeleton models in SW?

I'm pretty new in using Solid Works. But I know how to do it in Pro/E and Catia. Is it similiar to the methodic in Catia, i.e. you create a skeleton part that contains the important festures.

The functionality is called Assembly Layout, It is similar to a regular sketch at assembly level but you must create it using the layout toolbar or LAyout Tab on the new Command Manager bar.

This is like a 3D sketch but you can use any plane as a reference and it does not show as an assembly sketch. The items you sketch in the layout are listed under the Mates Tab in the Feature Manager and can be grouped together to form blocks which are selections of Layout Sketch entities that Parts can be created from using
Insert > Component > From Block.

If you goto the First link you can reach the rest using the arrows on the page.

I'm trying to get a more thorough understanding of this but just began using it to test the improvements in the SW Top Down design ability.
