Question:- Can the warp tool be considered an engineering tool?


I just managed to (re) create a model using warp...


The model is of a bent spring....


The original model was made in the bent condition.


The warped version was created straight, then bent thro' the same arc angle as the original.


When super imposing them, one over the other, there are 'significant' differences to the coils.


Question:- Can the warp tool be considered an engineering tool?
 
What do you mean by an "engineering tool"?


Are you trying to simulate a machine operation, like that of a bend machine? If so, that is not what the warp tool is made for. That's more like a spinal bend or a sheetmetal mode bend.


The warp tool is intended for models that are most likely created with surfaces for an organic, aesthetic, or ergonomic appeal, that you then want to alter by stretching, bending, twisting, etc.

Thanks for your reply,


I was using the spinal bend sucessfully to go from straight to bent and it gives a much more accurate result than the warp tool. (Not quite 100% yet, a few tenths of mm out,but there are more options to adjust in a spinal bend feature)


Im looking fror a feature to go from the finished part to the 'straight' version .....


sheet metal wont help with a springI suspect.


What feature could help to go from bent to straight? oops got it wrong first time!

warp will not flex your spring (assuming you are talking about a helical spring with a round cross section) like you are looking for. What you want is a 'flexible component' or to manage the spring with a relation so when the spring is one inch (closed) it will have the same number of rungs per inch. With a 2 inch (fully relaxed) position there should be eight rungs per inch still. This is the best bet because warp will distort and morph the actual cross section of the wire and thats not what you want. Warp would work if you were using a calender for the representation of the spring. I would still use a relation to drive the spring in the later situation.

By bend, I do not mean compress.


The finished controlling model is non linear pitch, non constant diameter helically wound around a 3d oscillating radiusarc.(using variable section sweep because of the diameter oscillation)


Now our tooling guys want a straight version.... I was looking for an 'unbend' command on a part that dosent include a bend featureyet.


I am slowly coming to think that the model has to be madealong a straight trajectory then bent using spinal bend....


Problem with this, is that all the pitch graphs, (there are 8 in total) relate to the arc angles in the finished part......


In a 'straight' part the are no arc angles! so theywill have to be converted into linear pitch graphs instead.





Btw, what do you mean with the calendar representation please?
