WF4 - Feature Recognition

[-Skint-]

New member
Hey guys, did a search on this and it came up with nothing so thought i`d start it up.

Has anybody downloaded and installed this new Feature Recognition tool ? It looks quite powerful having seen a demo at a WF4 launch event.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, like me, its basically a feature which allows imported geometry, IGES, STEP etc to be converted into native pro-e command sets in your model tree. Allowing you to then go in and change at will.

I have just downloaded it, but cant seem to find where it needs installing ? I will have a dig around and update the post if/when i find the answers.

A great new tool for WF4 though, im sure solidworks has had a similar feature recognition tool for some time ?

Feature Recognition Tool (FRT) for Pro/ENGINEER

With FRT, a plug-in application for Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 4.0, design engineers have a comprehensive set of tools to selectively replace geometries representing features in imported solid boundary representation models (IGES, STEP, etc) with true parametric features.

FRT enables design engineers to build design intelligence into imported models for easy, predictable changes. For example, a user can replace hole geometry with a hole feature and use it down-stream for assembly, detailing, and manufacturing. The non-modifiable static geometry is replaced with a fully editable hole feature. FRT can even recognize and place patterns of features.

Capabilities

Identify and replace static geometry with feature rich content.

Simple or Sketched Holes on Flat or Curved Surfaces

Protrusions or Pockets on Flat or Curved Surfaces

Extruded Slots

Constant Radius Rounds

Chamfers

Table Pattern for Holes
[/list]

To Install Feature Recognition

The Feature Recognition Tool (FRT) is available for download from the PTC Free Downloads page at http://www.ptc.com/community/free_downloads.htm. This Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 4.0 plug-in is currently available for 32 and 64 bit Windows platforms only.
Note: By default, the plug-in is configured to operate from the Pro/ENGINEER startup directory. However, it is recommended to install it in a designated location.

  1. <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    Extract the frt_proe.zip file contents to a directory on your hard drive (c:\ptc\frt).
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    Open Pro/ENGINEER and click Tools > Options. The Options dialog box opens.
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    In the Options box, type toolkit_registry_file.
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    In the Value box, type the path to the frt.dat file (c:\ptc\frt\frt.dat).
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    Click Add/Change and OK.
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    Edit frt.dat and add the full paths to the pt_feat_recgn.dll file (exec_file) and to the text directory (text_dir).

Example:
#Feature Recognition Tool Version: 38.04
name feat_recgn_dll
startup dll
exec_file C:\ptc\frt\pt_feat_recgn.dll
text_dir C:\ptc\frt\text
allow_stop true
delay_start false
end
Note: The version iteration of the tool is documented at the top of the frt.dat and prodev.dat files.

  1. <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    Copy the config.win file to one of the following locations:
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Subbulleted>
    <Pro/ENGINEER loadpoint>/text/
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Subbulleted>
    <Home directory> (usually C:\ unless set by the HOME environment variable)
    <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Subbulleted>
    The startup working directory

  1. <LI =kadov-p-CTopic-Text-Numbered>
    Restart Pro/ENGINEER. The FRT toolbar appears in the toolchests area.

Note: If the Feature Recognition toolbar does not appear in the Pro/ENGINEER toolchests area, ensure that the latest version of the config.win file in your startup working directory is the one that was extracted in step 1.

I tried it & found it to be very limited in the features that it could recognize. A baby step. Might be useful in 10 or 12 more releases.

Yeah after installing I found that to be the case also. I seen it demo`d at a WF4 launch event, the model they used for the demo was obviously purposely created, as when they used this recognition feature they turned a feature tree of one "imported Geometery" into about 20 features including rounds, extrudes etc.

I was impressed with the demo, sadly not so much with the reality just yet.

SolidWorks has a similar tool called FeatureWorks. It is useful for converting simple geometry from Pro-E into SolidWorks (extrudes, rounds, cuts, etc.), but cannot handle complex surfaces.FW also has problems recognizing sheet metal features.

The most useful aspect of FW is its ability to recognize rounds/fillets, and holesso these features can be suppressed before remodeling the part (STEP, IGES, etc.) as a feature-based part. I suspect FRT inside Pro-E will be similarly be useful in this way, although I have not tried it yet (still on WF 2.0 & 3.0).

I have used the FRT somewhat. I found it to be pretty limited.

I have used the remove feature more to remove rounds then re-add them parametrically manually rather than using the FRT. The remove feature is way better than the WF 3.0 beta version of the Remove.

Hi Naseem,

I already mailed in your yahoo account the feature recognition tool including Installation Instruction and help documentation.
