"where used" for parts?

gggggggggg

New member
Does anyone know if there is a way to find out which assemblies a part is used in, WITHOUT using Intralink or PDMLink?

<DIV>This was once possible, but not anymore.</DIV>
<DIV>You needa program that interogates all of your assembly files, and search for usage of the part in question. This require knowledge of the assembly file data structure. A few hard-core users figured this out, and had written such programs, and made them available.</DIV>
<DIV>However, ever since Pro/E began encrypting their files (in 2000i) making this type of query is impossible.</DIV>

Those filthy rat bastards. Encrypting their files to keep their own customers out of them.

Thanks for the response.

NOT TRUE

You can do a simple search search with windoz explorer. Look in all files named *.asm.* containing text part_name (with no extension).

What? Please explain this, as I am notunderstanding how to do this.

Right click on a folder and pick search from the pop-up menu.

In the dialog box labeled Search for files or folders named:
type *.asm.* or *.drw.*

In the dialog box labeled Containing text:
type in your model name without any extension, ie my_new_part

Hit Search Now button

Nope, this does not work.

Note you can only search for assemblies or drawings, not both at once. In the Search for files or folders named:

Type *.asm.*

-OR-

Type *.drw.*

It absolutely works for every release of Pro/E up to and including WF3.

Works for me!
Thanks Dr G. Very timely post- i needed to do this this morning.

@robert51 make sure you include both asterisks or it won't find anything.
