i am new to SW and i was doing a tutorial on gearmates.

when you mate 2 gears SW determines the ratio based on the 2 sizes
right? why does SW allow you to change the ratio without changing the
gear sizes? when would you ever need to do this? also why do my gears
always run into eachother? see pics

Try using Move Component along withcollision detection to set up the gears so they are touching but not interfering?

I think that SW work fine. That, because the teeth profile is not, in reality, a triangle. I do not know the english word for this profile. In romanian language is "evolventa". This profile avoid teeth interference and surfaces depreacion.

I Believe the english word is Involute Curve which is what you'd get if
you unwound a string that was wrapped around a cylinder like a spool.
