Windchill Projectlink review

Windchill Projectlink Version 7

I have been a loyal Pro engineer user for almost 10 years. This year I have been asked to migrate PTC assemblies into Windchill Projectlink.

PTC claim that this software "Seemlessly" integrates with Proengineer WF. I couldnt wait to get this done. Allowing a week to get one large assembly across.

When I eventually got to use it I was horrified that this software hadpassed a beta release. (What was worse..we paid money for it!)

There are many issues with this.

1. The software does not comply to "Fitts law" PTC know this but dont care. http://www.asktog.com/basics/firstPrinciples.html#fitts%27s% 20law

2. Double scroll bars that disappear when scaling and ever decreasing text size.

3. check boxes that are small and appear to be an oversight

4. Iteration control that does not work correctly (If you check out an asseembly it changes from -say 0.1 to 1 and then opens the base model?

5. Unstable database. Over the period of the week I have had 5-6 SQL, database errors and Javascript errors and regular time-outs.

6. If you have your Explorer language setup for anything other than English United states you cant cut & paste.

7. Then the server console! (There is no conflict resolution??) It displays as if you were looking through a mail-box slot. what happened to the rest of the screen?

8.Wt files and Cad models. Iteration discriptions show on the cad models but do not update on the viewables.

9.Product view does not display drawings correctly- we have a bitmap on our drawing titleblock. PTC have been informed about the lack of OLE support but this appears to be but on the back burner.

10. Ghost files or incomplete dependancies...This is extremely confusing. (These are displayed as a broken part.) If the resolution actually worked then I wouldnt of mentioned it..

11. Lack of a decent help file for Windchill projectlink. Almost 90% of the help related files about Windchill refer to Windchill Intralink or PDM link. It takes less time to do a Google search than using the internal help files within this software!

The good thing about this software is it gives you a lot of time each day for you to make a cup or cups of coffee.

Nice one PTC!!
