WinRAR?

Hi all,

are you familiar with "rar" zip files? I was just sent some and
told that it is like winzip and can be downloaded from web. I went to the
site, but hesitant to download since I know nothing about it and do not want to
add unnecessary programs (or headaches) to my computer. Just thought I
would ask.

thanks!

I use rar files and yes they are just like zip files. You can download from www.rarsoft.comand you should have no problems. It will be a trial version but it works well. It works on rar and zip files. I use it instead of winzip.

Go to the download page and use WinRAR3.60 Beta 3

Winrar works fine and without hidden problems. If you have winzip it doesn't interfere, you're only required to indicate what archives you want to "unzip" and what to "unrar". I even prefer the winrar explored add-ons like the possibility with any archive to issue an "extract here", which is faster than opening with winzip and indicating where to extract.

Winrar tends to compress slightly better.

You can do an 'extract here' in winzip also. You have to set the option in the winzip configuration. See the attached pic.

But, I do like WinRar better than winzip though!

I'm still on the old Winzip, that has no "extract here"

The Winrar thatI have also installed did make an entry in the RMB-menu. You can also select multiple files in one go, that's why I found it easy to use.

I find it a PITA because it has no worthwhile advantage and requires everyone to download and install yet another application. The more junk like this you add to your workstaion the more likely you are to have a problem. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with winrar, just that I like to keep a lid on the junk downloads that can drag along spyware and malware. If there was a compelling reason to use it that would be different but I see none. Rant over.
