wth?! - datum planes won’t display

For some reason the datum planes will not display in this model. I'm perplexed. It becomes infuriating when I try to bring the part into my assembly but none of the planes I need to mate it up are there.

The datum planes, of course, show in the model's tree, just not in the display of the model itself. If I click on a plane in the model tree it will show up highlighted in red on the screen, but the second I click away it vanishes again. And this method of getting them to show up isn't available in asembly mode, of course.

What in the world?

I don't have any layers...that I know of. Don't actually know what a layer is yet -- just haven't looked into them -- too busy learning other things. I made the model entirely myself though, and I never consciously did anything with layers.

By the way, just to clarify, the planes display button is in the pressed position in that pic, it's just it turns that shade when moused over, but it is in the display planes position.

Hide and Layers are two separate but somehow linked entities, Kind of like a Brother and Sister that love to fight but have different curfews and behavioral rules.

If you Hide items they get dimmed in the Model Tree which is a lot harder to see then expanding the Planes Layer Tree and looking for the Rogue Plane.

My big grievance is that most of the Right Click options to hide or show are disabled during feature creation. Because we all know how efficient it is to cancel feature creation show and hide what we may need to use or not use and then recreate a feature Which is what Show/Hide would have you do.

Even Layers sometimes disallow changes of members during feature creation.
. And that's where the Hidden Items layer tab comes into play. With out exiting Feature creation you can look for the name of the Hidden or Blanked Features you want to select. Right Click them and select Remove Items and click yes to the stupid time wasting prompt which is not as efficient as Undo is. Then you will see the hidden features and with the hidden features grouped together on the Layer tree it saves Mouse Time wasted on surfing the MTree.

Suggestion:
Don't use Hide on Parts.
Create a Layer called Solid that contains solid Geometry as a Rule and when you want a Part hidden go to the model tree and browse to your Solids Layer and Hide it.

Wow, that was so strange. I never even knew about this layer tree in the first place. So I would've never figured this out on own (nor would any other Pro/E user who hasn't specifically been informed about layers). Yeah, all the datum planes were hidden, yet they were displayed in model tree as if not hidden (eg if you right-clicked on them in model tree then you had the option 'hide' rather than 'unhide'). Majoruser interface flaw if you ask me.

thanks

It's working exactly as it is supposed to. Being able to click on the model tree and have a hidden item flash is very useful for deciding it's the one to choose without having to mess with layer status.
