Extrude to construction surface

Greetings,

I have been trying out the demo version which doesn't come with help(!?!). I want to make a cut extrusion to a construction surface but the extrude to intersect feature doesn't permit an extrude to a surface not part of a solid it seems. Do you need additional modules to do this?

The second problem is that the surface is just for construction. I want to turn it off after I'm done. Is there any way to first, extrude to a surface and second, define an extruded surface as construction geometry?

Help much appreciated.

It should allow you to extrude up to a surface. Make sure that the surface well overlaps your sketch. In some cases it won't work, or you'll get an error message about tiny edges. I'll point you to some tutorials on the internet that will help you.

The Regular Version doesn't come with help either. But you came to the right place most people in the forums I've used could kick any Tech Support person's a--.

If the surface is just for Construction you can edit its color and set a transparency with View -> Color & Appearance Advanced Tab and add a it to a layer called 00_CONST_SURF so you know it's a construction surface. The 00_ will also put it at the top or near the top of the layer tree. You can also hide it by selecting the feature in the tree and choose Hide from the pop-up menu. The surface will show the next time you open the model so to keep it hidden go to your Layer Tree right click and choose Save Status and save your model. This will keep the hidden status for the feature when it is next opened.

When setting depth for cut use the upto surf option the icon with the Red line on it.
If you are getting a "Could not extrude up to surface." error it's probably because the cut extends outside the boundary of the upto surface. The surface must be able to fully cap your cut.

You can also get the same result without using a cut.
Easier Way:
To do so select the surface your sketch is on and hit the Offset Tool Icon.
Change the flyout icon from standard offset feature to Replace Surface Feature, the one with the sin wave squiggle see the pic.
For the Replace Quilt, select your surface feature.

Thanks to both for the tutorials, docs and tips.

I've been using Inventor for years but I'm hoping to land a new job at a company that uses ProE. I've got a couple of weeks before they make a decision so I figured showing a little effort getting familiar with the software before then might help my chances. Never a waste of time to expand ones' skills anyways.

I'm really starting to like this software-steep curve at first but pretty slick once you get the hang of it.
