I've tried to make the same thing happen but have not been successful. Please let me know what button is frozen (post a picture or icon). All of mine are visible even if I do not have an active model.
I am not sure what option are you are looking at, I also dont understand why you are looking for a different option, if you place a general view it will place a view of the active model only. to put a view of the different model you need to add or set that particular component in the properties.
