View attachment 2637Hi All,

I've attached a 3D part here. I'm trying to create a drawing that
captures all the revelant measurements so that it can be manufactured
but I've no idea how this can be done. (i'm not a mechanical engineer).

Can anyone here please look at the part and give suggestions as to which view is necessary.

The problem is that the part has surfaces at an angle thats not 90deg (
or multiples of it). So when I have different projections of it. It
just doesnt show up.

Hi Deepak,

I'm not so much worried about the larger part, but the details at the beginning.

Here i have a hole that is normal to lower surface. Also the lower surface has 4 circular protusions.

The top surface at the beginning has a triangular cutout.

If you open the part file i've included and view it.. you can see what im talking about.

How do you capture these details in a drawing so manufacturer can build the part?

May I know for mechanical drawings... what is the standard views needed?

My suggestion would be a top, front, side, back. Then perhaps to show more clearly the hole pattern and the triangle cut you could create some detail views. Also, on the triangle cut that you have, a section view might be good to show that the cut is 90 degrees to the angled surface. If you use show and erase and show all dimensions that will help you figure out what views are needed as well. I usually create a few basic views and the start showing dimensions one feature at a time. As you come across feature dimensions that cannot be shown, create a new view to support that feature. I think showing the dimensions one feature at a time is the safest way to make sure you do not forget something on the drawing. Hope this helps,

Hi Darraign,

Thanks. I will follow your suggestions.

I'm new to using Pre/E Wildfire. I'll try to figure out how to create the views.

May I know what are the commands to create a section view?

To get a section view, open the model. Go to the "View" pulldown and click on "View Manager". A small dialog box should pop up. Click on the tab that says "Xsec". This will be where all your cross sections will be. Click on "New" and first you will have to create a name for the section. After typing in a name, hit enter and it will ask you what kind of a section. The defaults will be ok for what you are trying to do. So click "Done". Now it wants you to pick a plane that your section will be through. The triangle cut appears to be centered on your model. If you have a datum plane that runs through the center of your part, click on it. If not you can create a datum plane through the center either by offset from one of the sides or through the center hole of the group of 5 on the opposite side. Once you pick the datum the dialog box will be back. Then "Close" and go to the drawing. In the drawing, right click, new view. When creating sections you have to orient the view so that it is parallel to the section view. In your case, you would want a side view, left or right does not matter. Once oriented under "View Type" click on "Sections" and click on the option of "2D cross-section". Then choose your section in the pulldown under "Name". That should do it.

I agree with darraign some time you need more then3 views, all depending on the complexity of the model. specialy when they aren't symmetric. Don't be afraid of adding details, sections, parcial, auxiliary, etc. viewand notes. They are always appreciated by the machine shop. Send me a e-mail address i got tutorials that could help you get started.
