We recently had issues here using the File-->Mirror Part. Here is a process I came up with in how to deal with mirrored parts and it's all controlled by a Family Table.

What you want to do is model your part they way you want it. Next Mirror the part. After that you need to create an extrude or something to remove one of the parts. The mirrored part and the mirror part removal are features in the Family Table that can be turned on or off. Then after that you can add specific features to whichever part you want.

I like this technique as you now can have a nice smart table/repeat region in the drawing that will show the unique features/parameters of each mirrored part, say like Catalog.

Here's my QnD on this. (5.9 MB SWF Video File)
Right click and "Save Target As..." to download it and save for future REF.

James - why would you not use "File - Mirror part" for

this?

This way you can add side specific text for laser marking/engraving and then correctly place it and show it in the drawing. Plus when you "File - Mirror part" all the text will be mirrored too.

The thing that really drove it was that our company recently moved to PDMLink and our technique makes managing the CAD files must better/smarter. Previously we would have the side specific info (catalog #, part #, parameters, etc.) in the Family Table that is used in a repeat region in a drawing. But then we'd have to use a note in the drawing that the Family Table mirrored part is just used for Parameter reporting and not actually a mirrored part physically. A file created the "File - Mirror Part" way has to be opened and updated to make sure it is correct. We would then call the "File - Mirror Part" part XXXX_MIRROR.prt to denote that it's a mirrored part. The name has to be different too due to PDMLink naming requirements. Also if someone works on it they don't need to know to look for a XXXX_MIRROR.prt to update. Using the Family Table way I've described you get an instant feedback that the mirrored part is correct and not needing to maintain an additional file, the "File - Mirrored Part" (XXXX_MIRROR.prt), just makes for smarter CAD management.

We are now also needing to model the threads on parts we have made from the SLS/DMLS process. When we mirrored a part the thread would also mirror, which was something we didn't want. We need the threads on both parts to be Right handed. This allows you to have the same type of thread on both parts.
