Title Block Creation

design-engine

New member
I am creating a new title block for a company that wants to show volume
among other parameters in the title block. I have
used Pro/PROGRAM to generate volume and weight before. I don't
want the user to have to populate the titleblock opting instead for the
user to fill out parameters in the part and for the title blocks to
pull from parameters in the part.

Just wondering what others on the forum have done in the past

and

what are the general procedures for adding parameters and making smart titleblocks?

For common assemblies.

We use a layout, to assign job number, order number, discription, etc.
Also few paramenters which should be filled in per part. Material, supplier, cost.etc

the drawing extracts information from these.

It would be interesting to see what others do.

Hey All:

Is there a REAL how-to for title block/drawing format creation? PTC tells us that we can, and partly how, but never COMPLETELY how. You know, step by step, no assumptions. For us guys that havenever had to do it, but find ourselves in a possition of needing to.

couple more questions....

1. Where is a list of parameters that are automatic like &scale ...

was looking for one like &date

2. any hints on converting mass properties to ounces/millileters or other volume?

3. How can I get &model_no.PRT to work properly. without having a space:

450032 .PRT quotes or something?

Roger,

step by step

determine the boundaries of your format to match any limitations on your plotter(s).

draw in any grid referencing info etc. within the plotting limits.

create some border tables and merge cells as necessary.

Enter the company required bollocks into the tables

Enter the "smart" parameter text into the tables.

Correctly justify and set styles for all text

Retrieve any auto-B.o.M. tables and place in format

Save in the formats folder of your library and point pro_format_dir at this folder

design-engine,

for 2. have you tried

custom_density = scale_factor * mp_mass("") / mp_volume("")

3. the parameter name you want is probably &model_name (and no suffix) or
maybe you should try {0:&model_name}{1:.}{2:&type}

Thanks for your "step by step". The keyphrase you missed is "no assumptions". I would not expect a complete, step by step written out here, however, I hope there is one available on the web. Please understand that it is my ignorance of the nuances that have me baffled. The little things that "everbody "knows? Sorry, I don't know them.

Roger,

If I had to create a brand new set of borders (A0-A4) from scratch, it would probably take a day or more and I think I know what I am doing so there is no way I can give you keypress-by-keypress instructions.

Read the steps. Try to complete them in order. Tell us EXACTLY where you get stuck.

The first link appears to be instructions on how to create a template which I do not think is what Roger wants.

The instructions in the pdf are not good. They take no account of plotter limits which is important if you want full size prints or don't want to lose items off the edge of the paper.

I would also recommend using one or more tables to create the title block and merging cells as required instead of manually drawing the lines. That way you can easily control cell size, add additional lines and columns and effectively lock text into specific boxes.

Thanks guys.

I already looked at the PTC link, not useful, as Dell_Boy said.

The mcgill link combined with Dell_Boy's suggestions should be useful.

ok. The 'complete list of parameters' was a big help!

I find it frustrating that I have to use lines in the tile block since
I am required to use tables inside the title block. My
client an ID firm wants no lines in the title block itself. They
smirk when I say that you can't do that. So frustrating.

Spaceing is a concern too. I want to merge two tables but there
is content in the second cell of the table. Will not let you
merge out the lines.

Lastly, I can't seem to center the text inside the table cell.
Well lets say that is the problem. It centers perfectly. I want
word 'date' above the &date parameter. So If I put that in
it's own cell then try to merge the cells last the table will not let
me merge.

If I just draw the titleblock like in old School AutoCAD the parameters don't work from format to drawing

if I do it this way I can't merge the line betwen date

and where the &date parameter goes. me mad

http://www.mcgill.ca/files/cden/TitleBlock181105.pdf < this is
totaly no use. There is no smart parameters in the title block at
all.

Hey Dell_Boy Do you use Dell computers or is that a dumb
quesiton. I got the new Dell Precision Laptop with 2 gigs of ram
and I am very happy with it. Actually we got the entire office
layed out with Dell Computers. MVP's and above. This is not
a Dell advertisment and ;) all that.

Bart,

is this what you can't do?

There is merging cells and there is blanking lines. They each have their use. Merging is good when you have made a lot of different smaller table rows and columns and you need to combine some to get the areas you need. With this function, you should never need to use lines, but it does take some planning, and trial and error. Blanking lines only controls the display, and does not merge the cells.

In my experience, you must first select the whole table to have access to the "line display" function. This can be done by selecting one cell, then picking SELECT > TABLE from the table menu. Then you can right click or use the Table menu to get to "Line Display". Then you can blank and unblank lines.

Chris

As a guide to creation

Roughly sketch out what you want on paper first
Create the table with ALL the rows and columns.
Merge the cells that will function as one cell.
Enter the text
Adjust the "Text Style"
Enter any required symbols
tweak column and row sizes
blank the lines as necessary
Save in the library.

BTW, is there any way to associate a symbol with a table? In other words, can I somehow embed my company logo in the definition of a given table? My goal is to have the logo already present in a table when it is inserted into a drawing. Currently I insert the table and then separately insert and place the logo symbol, and then save it as a format.
