There is also the option of using skeleton techniques but defining the top-level features within the context of the assembly rather than within a skeleton part model.

not sure if this could get added but I use "cutout" often as a boolean operation. It is particularly helpful when you need to parametrically model the surrounding air volume of a chamber for example with respect to preparing a CFD analysis...
