What is the best way of modelling text ?

Hi Guys, Everyday I visit these pages to learn a little bit more about modelling, today I have another thing that I want to learn and I know that you guys can help me. The NOOB Returns
smiley17.gif

How do I model text ? I remember seeing a rendered image of a water meter and there were questions of how the modeller rendered sometext onto the side, you all remember this part ? Anyway, I have just created part of a TV bracket, and the customer has requested his logo on the part. I have managed to do it, but I created the text in Adobe Illustrator thenimported that as a sketch (doing in illustrator I know it was the corrects scale etc ), then I simply extruded it. Is this the best way ? I know there is a proper way of extruding text in WF 2.0 but I have absolutely no idea how to do it.

I apologise in advance for not searching through the help files, I like posting the questions here anyway because we get many variations of how these things are achieved, and all this helps me to learn.

I have attached a picture of the part below ( very basic so no taking the mickey out of my render hehe ).

Thanks a lot.

If text must be a part of geometry then you use standard extrusion, if text is only for decoration then is maybe better just apply decals when rendering.

In yours case go to extrude, while in sketch you got toll called Create text as a part of section (icon looks like letter A with dimension). Then you got dialog where you write text and select font in which text will be written. Also you got options place along curvewhich is useful for non linear writing.

Another useful tip, if you need non standard fonts (in regular case it got only ProE fonts), in config options set this parameter:
pro_font_dir
to path where windows fonts are (default C:\WINDOWS\Fonts), and you will got all fonts that are in windows.

Hope that this helps

Hi Isair,

You know what, I remember doing that when I first starting using pro-e ( 2 months ago ) but I completely forgot about that option in sketcher mode. Haha how stupid am I, thanks a lot for that.

I guess what I am doing is not wrong, but the imported sketched text from illustrator could potentially cause problems.

Thanks for the tip on the windows fonts... brilliant.

You should get gold stars for all the help that you give on this forum

Your method is absolutely not wrong Skint.

When it comes to logos it isnt usual that you can use a standard font to create the text and it usually also contains other non-text graphics.
Since you never-ever change a customer logo the best option is to use the graphics provided and convert to a vector format that can be used inthe sketcher.

The problem you might encounter is a too complex sketch that has to be divided into two or more sketches.

ankarl, thanks. Yes you are right, I have tried importing different sketch feature`s before and had to do quite a lot of work to it. Especially when importing an autocaddwg some of the sketches are incomplete and require work doing to them to make them work. Many times autocad drawings are not exact, so the sketcher fails.

Its good to know that what I am doing is along the right track, I am always unsure of wether or not I am doing things the right way, or the easiest way.

This is why I appreciate you guys so much. Thanks for the help.

Hehe, no problem Skint, and that stuff about gold star, it would be better that when I will have problem someone helps me, rather to get gold star (it would only collect dust)

Rather than creating graphics in the part, I create an extruded part that is just the graphic. Then I assemble it to my part in an assembly. You can then 'Scale Model'the part without having to mess with the sketch dimensions.

Hi telecomguy, that is a good idea too, but surely that is only really possible for text which is applied to flat surfaces etc, when applying text to curvature or shaped features this is much more difficult right ?

Im still learning

True. I only use it for flat surfaces.

But a thought just occurred. Could you use that part to punch/form a piece of sheetmetal in the flat pattern and then bend it back?!?!? I'll have to try that sometime.

Instead of extruding,I have also used Offset feature. I simply limited the offset from "all surface" to "Sketched Region". To make the sketch more reliable we have vectorised our logo "by hand", that is created it again in Autocad. This sketch has far less anomalies than autmatically traced. It is worth it when is offen used.

But Offset is wasting much time in Regenerate. So I always Offset the surface to the fit distance, then protrusion the text.At last, I use quiltto cut the protrusion. This method is faster than Offset while model is Regenerating.

Hi shaoxiaoj,

First of all welcome to the forum. Thats an interesting point you have made, I have never though of the consequences in regeneration time using different methods of modelling,

What part of China are you from ?

Hi Skint,

Because of being frequently modified and regenerated, the models we do wasting much more time than usual.I oftengo tothecrush-room for a cup of tea or smoking when the regeneration is beginning.ButwhenI return, the regeneration is notoften finished. So I payattention to the time the each feature using.

I come from Shandong province in north of China.

I will bear that in mind on my future models shaoxiaoj, at the moment my models are not very big so I dont have that problem yet

I did some travelling in China last year. I had to go to the factory that manufactures our goods,I had to set up the QC department. The factory in China is based in Shantou on the western coast, but I also visited Guangzhou and many other places. I had a great time and hope to visit again soon.

HeHe!Welcome you! China is more bigger than UK. She has many beautiful places waiting for your visiting.

There are many CAD/CAM/CAE websites in China. You canviewthem if you can read Chinese.Iintroduce you a website:www.icax.cn.It is the biggest CAD/CAM/CAE website in China.

That site looks huge, I wish I could speak and read chinese hehe. I intend to start learning the basics of mandarin this year. I speak a few basic words and can count numbers etc, but I need to learn more just incase I end up with a business dealing with Chinese
