Fixed Index BOM renumbers itself!

Ok here's my dilemma:

I have a repeat region BOM table. Where the quantity is reported, I have 5 separate colums, for different versions of the assemblies, which we call "groups". I take care of those columns by way of a family table, and can control the QTY column in my repeat region easily by using "Column Model/Rep". Normally, however, there is only one version of the assembly to start with, so only one column is filled out. I have strict numbering requirements so I use the fix index option to allow me to assign any number I want to any component of the assembly. So I renumber all my components, the table re-orders them numerically, life is great. Now down the road sometime I need to add a group. So in the next open QTY column, I enter in the top cell "&rpt.qty", and set my "Column Model/Rep" to be the next instance of the family table assembly, then I update the table, and the QTY automatically populates itself. But UT OH! My index numbers have all gone away, and started back at 1,2,3,4 and not what I fixed them to.

Has anyone seen this and can you help???

single table. here's what it looks likeView attachment 1260

the first group would normally be either the generic or the first instance of my assembly. If i re-order the index using fix index to be 11,12,13 then add &rpt.qty to the second column and use Column Model/Rep to assign that column to report the quantity of my second instance, it will renumber my index back to 1,2,3...
