bit of a strange comment I know, but I got my hands on ARX for a couple of hours this past week so I said I'd play around a little..

bit of a loss of quality with the jpeg compression but it's not bad..

some subtle interobject reflections and shadows..

playing around with depth of fileds..

now admiteddly the speaker grill looks a bit strange here, I didn't have a "speaker grill" texture map,so I applied knurled aluminium andplayed aroung with the lightworks settings.

now admittedly, this image was touched up with photoshop.. lotof work to put all numbers on the surfaces (1,2,3 & "NOKIA"done in Pro, the rest in photoshop)

this is one of my first ARX images... I liked it at the time but now I think it could be done better..

Anyway, please post your comments about ARX and if you have any images created in Pro, please post them here.

I'd prefer if this post didn't turn into to a Pro Vs MAX Vs Maya Vs whatever.. we know who the winner is going to be, there have been enough posts on this topic already..

Hi james,

I'm a newbie on Pro/E and maybe this is a stupid question, but where can I get ARX ?

Thanks a lot for your answer. Ahh, the images are very nice.

Simple.. just pay PTC an extra $!,000
smiley36.gif
.. it's an add on module (much like most options with in ProE) and it's not as yet available on the student version.. but I was talking to Tim Harrisson and a guy caled Clive Daviesfrom Lightworks who supply the rendering engine, who say that ARX may become available on the educational packages..

anybody else have any comments? or images of their own?

as I said, I didn't spend a lot of time (or any)on a texture map for a speaker grill.. of course I could have simply downloaded a "mesh" type texture and applied it but I wanted to see what ARX could do out of the box.. maybe it can be done better with ARX, it probably can.. I only got my hands on it for a few hours..

Again, I know ARX isn't going to be as good as max, maya etc.. etc. etc. but ARX doesn;t cost anything close to those dedicated packages, and all of your mechanism conections etc are all still intact.. and your setting wil dynamically update as your design developes.. you don;t need to out put a seperate file and re assign your materials/texturemaps etc..

as for lightworks..

some pretty nice renderings! in theory ProE should be able to do the same!

With a Smile.. I wouldn't expect anything else from you Speling my good man!

sorry, wasn't clear.. ARX (otherwise knos as photolux) has been available since 2001 I think.. images above done in WF2.0 & Wf 3.0.. the lighting is alot easier to control in wf3.0.. I have seen some other pretty good renderings ( a Heineken bottle topand a wooden lounge chair springs to mind)

as for what do I do all day.. pretty much I experiment with ProE! while I'm suposed to be doing a masters.. the thing is that I specifically chose a masters topic that would push me to learnas much about ProE as possioble. essentailly make myself as "saleable" as possible to prospective employers.. and it's fun!

And don;t be so tough on the PTCguys(and gals!among others Danae Isakov plm for Detail) I've met quite a few of them (the plm's at least) over the last two years and I gotta say, they know their stuff! cant speak for customer suport tho'.. never spoke to them.

it's actually not a bad renderer in fairnes... I was only playing around for a couple of hours with it and these are by no means the best renderings that ProE can accomplish..

I didn't go through any tutorials or anything so I assume tha people can do a better job!

Advanced Rendering eXtension .. sorry, it's PTC comercial name for it and what they advertise it as so I kinda assumed that's what people would know it as..

but you gotta admit, thelightworks renderer is not a bad one!

Image created using the LightWorks rendering engine.
Model courtesy of PTC.

nobody have anything to add no? I was hoping that others would submit their renderings done in Pro.. I'm interested to find out what can actually be done with ARX out of the box..

James

Well nice very nice ones!
smiley32.gif

But then it was W3, not in W2, I have tried to render some of my works, but always I found to have problem with floor (determine point when products touch floor) and with lights, but I see that this things are solved in W3
smiley17.gif

I will submit my pic when I come home

Isair.. which was WF3.0? the car? or my work? my work is a combination of wf2.0 & 3.0.. but it all could have been done in 2.0.. I just want ed to play around with the new lights setup in 3.0..

I don't think the room set up dialog has been sorted in 3.0... I could be wrong tho..

I also had problems with aligning the room.. but yo can get it pretty close with the rotate about axis settings..

James

Your works of course

I saw demo rendering of W3, and yes lights setup is much better and easier.

About that floor thing, well I have assembled surface instead of floor to get precise position, and then stick texture on it
smiley36.gif

I saw also lightworksgallery, but then I think that with new W3 rendering will Pro rendering bee better

well as far as I know the only update to the advanced rendering capability will be the ability to modify the lightworks material files..

then in the standard pro photorender (also ARX) you can directly manipulate the lights and you can also save an entire scene (room, light, settings etc..)

the thing about using a surface as the floor in Pro/Photorender, is that there is no interboject reflections.. (raytracing) between components.. but if you use the standard room floor, you can get quite nice reflections..

Thanks for the complement by the way!

Well all great work should get complements (and not only complements, money to
smiley36.gif
)

Now I get motivation for rendering all my work (well I don't have much

), and the new project I'm working on
