RENDERING...Q&A and GALLERY

Hi Miko,

Thanks, it has all been modelled in ProE WF2, but rendered in 3DS Max with the Brazil plug-in.

Nice model Red, fantastic details, its kinda hard to view the render with that large of resolution tho.

ZAKI- I pay for webhosting. I have my own site that I host images to, I get 150meg a month. I use http://www.ezhoster.com

Models and renders are looking great, sorry I havent been able to show any updates, my computer at home is still in shambles. I decided to change the video card to something alot more powerful so I just bought one of the best I could find. Plus, I wanted it to be HDTV ready so I could use my 40" HDTV in the living room and get rid of the computer room all together. I am having aresolution problem but hoping to get it solved soon. I gotta say tho, its nice to sit on my couch with a cordless mouse and keyboard modeling on a 40" HDTV.

Hi RD

I have been using the free download student edition of 3DS but could not get pro-e to talk to it. I had to use step or iges files to transfer the data which removes any material information from the model, am I doing something wrong? The other question I have is, what is reflected in the buttons on your hi-fi image. I can't see any part of the model with the reflected colours. Is it part of the environment image? Finally, is this model a pro-e Assembly or a single part, I have tried making models ether way and have found pros and cons for both methods. Thanks

Steven

Hi Steven,

I export the ProE assembly to a STEP file as this keeps the assembly structure, this I import to Max using a plug-in called PowerNurbs. I don't use any material info from ProE at all, I create all the material within Max. I have some reflective panes and an HDRI map that reflects in the chrome parts. There is a eval copy of Brazil that you can download for free, it's called Brazil Rio. Look in www.splutterfish.com

Great render, it got touch of reality all over the image

I got some sort of request, if you do have some time I would like to see this stereo rendered in ARX (at the best possible level), and put this image render in ARX next to image render in Max, so we all could see difference and benefits of both of them

Hi Isair.. Yes this is pretty good idea ... I would like to see difference between ARX in Proe and Advanced renderer in 3D StudioMax.. What do you think RD ?

Miko asked me to look at this render and tell him what I thought. I think its good enough for me to host and post. Great work MIKO!

MIKO'S MODEL AND RENDER

tototo.jpg

Ok you guys may not believe this but i just got paid all day to read all 50+ pages of this thread to determine whether we need new software at work or a Wildfire add-on. all i can say is good work to all who have submitted these great renderings. I am going to get involved with the indutrial design for my company and will look here if i need any help in the upcoming months. CP how did you get the above image to display so clearly. I downloaded his original zip file and opened the tif file and it looked very jagged to me. It cracks me up that all 50 pages since Sept 2005 have pretty much been the same 5-6 people, I feel like i know you guys already.

edit: i realized that my picture viewer was zooming it when i selected "actual size" and then showed it correctly when i selected zoom "100%". I assumed they would give the same result but apparently not

ps. i would also like to see the difference between ARX and 3DS

Isair, Miko

I can't help you with rendering in ARX as we don't have it here. Although IMHO ARX will not touch 3DS Max & Brazil in a million years. Why not download the eval versions of the said software and see what I mean. There is soooo much to change in Brazil it's mind boggling. I also us Rhino & Flamingo too, even though this is good it still is not as good as Max & Brazil. In fact we are using renderings for our publications and retail cartons rather than photography.

Rydanlav,

Take a look at my post a few posts back, there is a link to a rendering that used Max with the Brazil plugin. BTW we're a rendering family here

Hello again RD

I have used your link and downloaded the 30 day trial and as if by magic my pro-e step file appears in 3ds max
smiley4.gif
. I am not that used to 3ds max and am having some trouble assigning materials to surfaces as I do in pro-e. My pro-e model is a part not an assy, I think this is causing my problem as I can only assign one material to the whole part
smiley5.gif
. Should I regenerate my model as an assy. to allow 3ds max to assign materials to each part within that assy. or is there a way of assigning a material to a quilt surface in 3ds max? Sorry to ask such a none pro-e related question, but the 3ds max renderer is great

. Thanks in advance

Hi steven,

I had exactly the same problem, which is why I import assemblies rather than one big part. I'm sure you can extract separate surfaces, but at the moment I have no idea how to do it. BTW there are loads of Max tutorials about, just do a Google search on 3DS Max tutorials. Try down loading the Brazil plugin trial, the trial version is called Brazil Rio. You'll find it at www.splutterfish.com

I would gladly try any other software for rendering including 3ds Max but time for learning it is something I don't have, thats way I asked you if you could do rendering for us all, but since you don't have ARX then I guess we all will wait to someone who's got knowledge and both of softwares to show us big difference.
It is hard to compare 2 softwares based on different picture, but if you do have same model, and rendered with both of them then you can really see difference.
Could you say to us did you use training for 3ds or did you learn it by yourself?, and if you have learn it by yourself how much time did you need it?

Rydanlav25
Nice first rendering

Although your part is somehow strange, I can't determine is it glass or something high reflective? You should chose different material for part, because when rendering all that matters is part and to look great, everything else are only details that complete whole picture.
Also another tip, try to use smooth shadows instead of hard, you would have better shadow effect.

PS You do have great job > payed for reading whole thread

3DS is definetly a better renderer but if you are experienced enough with ARX and have a powerful enough computer to troubleshoot, you can produce renders that will stand up to 3DS renders. I have been complimented by advanced 3DS user on my renders with ARX and they think i'm using 3DS so I personally know its possible and all those renders were done with a slow azz computer. With my new computer, what took me over two hours to render now takes me 6 minutes. WHich means, my trouble shooting just took a big step forward. I've done a few renders with the new computer and I must say, they are VERY nice. I have 3DS, I know how powerful it is, but for static display renders, if you know your shyt with ARX, you can hang with 3DS. And, the more we prove that ARX is a formidable renderer, the more PTC will address the issue of upgrading it again.

Also, as far as I know, there is no way to specify layers on a part in 3DS from pro-e, so either you make a new part for every single different color surface and assemble them (which is a horribly slow process), or you buy a translation program that will cost you 200.00.

rydanlav25-

Try turning the reflecivity down to like 45 and decrease the RGB to around 20's. The part is too reflective and too light.

I'm not even able to view them from work. Admin need to follow thru and increase the file upload size to 300kb. Come on ADMIN!

Hi Guys

I have managed to import my model into 3DS as an assy. I am having big problems using it at the moment. I am trying to learn the Pro-e style tool and basic 3DS at the same time. Its overloading my brain some what
smiley5.gif
. So, for now I'll stick to the ARX, I'll start to fiddle with the ARX setup once I have learned the style tool. Does anyone know of any ARX guides on the web?
